South County Athletic Association (SCAA) has youth sports programs in the Lorton / Springfield VA area for football, soccer, cheerleading, lacrosse, basketball, field hockey, wresting, volleyball, and track.
COACHES NEEDED - Since SCAA Volleyball is a volunteer run organization, we are in need of coaches. We would like to ensure we have enough coaches to give each player the maximum number of "touches" and game play. As a coach, you get to decide what day(s) and time(s) you would like to practice from the schedule provided by FCPS. If interested, please click HERE.
There are 3 recreational leagues (preparatory for 4th graders, elementary (5th-6th), and middle (7th-8th). All leagues are co-ed (meaning a team can consist of both girls and boys). Depending on the interest and skill level, there may be a middle school travel team that will participate in a Fairfax County travel league.
Preparatory - for players in 4th - 8th grade interested in learning the foundations of volleyball and who have zero to intermediate experience. There are only practices and no matches.
Players in 4th grade will participate in the preparatory league, which includes a series of training sessions designed to introduce the players to volleyball and to learn foundational building blocks...proper passing and serving and team work (communication and attempt 3 touches before sending ball over net). The coach(es) may utilize training sessions towards middle or latter part of the season to conduct scrimmages.
For players in 5th - 8th grade, if there are only enough coaches and players to form 1 team in a given league and the overall interest or skill set is too low to compete in a local travel league, then the team will practice twice per week and focus on building the necessary skills to compete for the next season or school year.
Recreational - for players in 5th - 8th grade interested in learning the foundations of volleyball and who have zero to intermediate experience. Matches for the elementary and middle leagues could be played against other SCAA rec teams or against neighboring recreation clubs.
The players will focus on learning the foundational building blocks for passing, setting, and hitting. They will learn the key elements of team work (communication, attempt pass-set-hit before sending ball over the net, and learn to cheer on teammates regardless of points won or lost during games).
If there are at least 3 teams, your team may be assigned as the work team during game nights.Duties of the work team are: 2 line judges, scorekeeper, and down ref.
Playing time should be relatively equal but could vary due to how quick or slow the rotations happen and participation at practice.
Travel - for players in 7th - 8th grade interested in playing at a higher competitive level and skills. This league is for intermediate to advance players. Coaches have the discretion to recruit skilled players in the 6th grade. Matches are played against other organizations throughout Fairfax County. Since this league is more competitive, coaches have the autonomy to establish the playing time policy that will be shared with the parents and players at the beginning of the season.
